Healthiest Beers to Drink

Beers and beer drinking are associated with unhealthy living habits and many consider having a couple cold ones to be a bad for your health. Without a doubt downing countless beers on a regular basis is just plain unhealthy and will make your waistline larger, but just a few from time to time can actually be healthy as well as relaxing and enjoyable. An Italian research study revealed that consuming one pint per day decreases the risk of heart disease by 31% while another study showed that moderate beer consumption reduces the risk of kidney stones by 41%. In addition to these facts, beer is a natural plant source of vitamin B12 even though some may refuse to acknowledge the fact. Beer is also a known source of phytonutrients and is a helpful supplement to your dinner salad. So as beer has some nutritional value, what are some of the healthier beers?

One of the healthier beers is Pacifico. The Mexican pilsner only has 135 calories per 12 ounce serving and only 12 grams of carbs. As one of the lighter beers lower in alcohol and carbohydrates, Pacifico is a good choice for those who are watching their weight and calorie count. The lighter quality of Pacifico as well as the 4.5 percent alcohol content not only makes it healthy but also better tasting.

Guinness Draught on the contrary is darker, richer and heavier but yet still among the healthier brands of beers. The traditional Irish Stout most people think is hard hitting but manages to have only 128 calories and 11 grams of carbohydrates in each serving while having a fairly low alcohol content of 4.2%. Darker beers are rich in fiber, Guinness has 3.5 grams compared to the 2 grams found in light(er) beers.

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is another popular yet healthy beer that has lots of hops which means that the beer contains more Phytochemicals. Sierra Pale Ale is a lighter tasting beer and is not heavy on calories and carbs but still has more than others with totals of 175 and 14.1 grams and a slightly higher alcohol content of 5.6%. Sierra seems to have the best of both worlds, great tasting low and light calorized beer with enough alcohol to help you relax a little easier.

People who want to drink a light beer usually will not order a Sam Adams at the bar, but Sam Adams light lager is an option if you don’t want a heavier beer. The light lager by Sam Adams is tasty and only has 119 calories and 9.7 grams of carbs per serving which makes it ideal for those who are trying to watch their figure. Sam Adams light lager is also lower in alcohol content at just 4%, if you are having a few beers for the buzz, you might want to go with a Sierra Nevada or another beer with higher alcohol content as a way of avoiding the extra calories you would get by consuming more of the Sam Adams than fewer of a different kind.

Last on this list is Abita Purple Haze which is a beer that will help add antioxidants along with its unique raspberry flavor. The nutrients come from the power of the fruit while the purple lager has a fairly low alcohol content of 4.2%. Abita Purple Haze has 11 grams of carbs and 145 calories per serving which pretty healthy compared to some beer brands.
